CLINTON — The Maquoketa Cardinals girls track and field team won the B Team division of the annual River Queen Classic Relays on April 12 with 188-points, 25-points ahead of Northeast. (The A and B divisions represent school enrollment and determines which teams will compete against each other.)

Sophomore Reese Kuhlman finished 1st in three different events (200m, 400m, and the sprint medley relay team), along with one 2nd place finish in the 4×400 relay. 

Junior Clare Hackman also had a good night, winning the 800m dash and anchoring the distance medley relay team. Hackman was also on the 4×400 relay team that placed 2nd.

Coach Tod Bowman said, “We have a very balanced team with many girls who can be used in a variety of events to help out where needed. It was a great team victory.”

Hardin tops high jump, relay team; Card boys finish 6th

The Maquoketa Cardinals boys track and field team have been scoring points from multiple people this season. 

On April 11 the Cardinals finished in 6th place at a meet in Wilton but were only nine points away from second. Tye Hardin scored the most points for the Cardinals with 23. Wyatt Schwenker and Collin Grau each scored 10 points. Jonny Burns chipped in with 6.25 points.

Hardin placed first in the high jump, first with the 4×100 relay team, first with the 4×200 relay team, and second in the 200m dash.

On April 12 the team traveled to DeWitt for the Saber Relays. The Cardinals again finished 6th with 41 points. Hardin captured the high jump title for the second day in a row with a jump of 6-02 feet. Grau sent the discus flying 161-05 feet — good enough for 2nd place. Keelan Hoover placed 2nd in the long jump by traveling 20-01 feet.

Despite inclement and chilly weather cancelling various events last week, the boys were scheduled to travel to Tipton Tuesday April 19, for a 4:30 p.m. meet. On Thursday the boys travel to Bellevue; start time is 4:30 p.m.

EV places 5th only meet last week

DEWITT — The Easton Valley River Hawks boys track and field team got one meet in last week. On April 12 the River Hawks finished 5th in the Central DeWitt Saber Relays. 

Aidan Gruver continued the winning ways he has exhibited in the River Hawks’ three meets so far this season. Gruver has won the 200m dash in all three meets, even against some 4A runners. His time of 22.72 in the 200m is third best in Class 1A so far this young season. Gruver also has found success in the 100m dash as well in the three meets He has compiled one 1st-, one 3rd-, and one 5th-place title.

Luke Reuter has been near the top of the leader board all season thus far. He finished 3rd in DeWitt with a toss of 127-05. Charlie Simpson placed 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 19-07.50. The 4×100 relay team of Charlie Simpson, Kael Johnson, Carson Fuegen and Aidan Gruver finished in 3rd place.

This week the boys track team travels to Bellevue on Thursday, April 21, for a 4:30 p.m. start time.

Cardinal girls tennis sweeps Trojans

The Maquoketa Cardinals girls tennis team enjoyed the home cooking as they served up losses and swept the South Tama Trojans 9-0 during their first home meet last week. 

The Cardinals had lost on the road to Camanche April 5.

Maquoketa’s No. 1 roster player Jenna Wiebenga did not lose a game in singles as she downed her opponent 8-0. The Cardinals’ Laney Hafner and Tessa McCutcheon lost just two games in singles. Wiebenga/Hafner won their doubles match 8-2 to help lead the Cardinals to victory.

The Cardinals JV doubles teams went 3-3, while the singles went 1-1.
